Meet Markus Batchelor
My name is Markus Batchelor and I am a Class of 2015 Political Science Major in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. I was born and raised in the place we now all call home, Washington, D.C, east of the Anacostia River in Congress Heights.
Before coming to GW, I was involve in community service and local politics, serving as the 52nd Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia from 2009-2010 and Chairman of the Youth City Council from 2010 until the summer of 2011. I was also a member of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute, a 32 year old program in the District that focuses on leadership development, community service and college readiness.
I am proud a 2011 recipient of the Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarship and of the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commendation.
I am a co-founder and National President of the DC Statehood Student Association, an organization advocating for equality and democracy for the 618,000 residents of the District of Columbia who don't have congressional representation or control over local affairs.
In October, I was appointed to and currently serve on the GW Public Service Grant Commission that awards 30,000 dollars to student organizations and individuals to start community service initiatives on campus and around the city.
Since arriving at GW, I have been still active in the DC Community, currently serving as 1st Vice President of the Ward Eight Democrats, interning for Council Member At-Large Michael A. Brown, The MLK Memorial Dedication Host Committee and previously serving on the Ward Eight Redistricting Task Force.
I hope to bring my experience from what I am doing on campus and what I have done in the community to bring new and effective leadership to the SA. I look forward to talking and connecting with all of you in the weeks to come to express my vision for GW and ask for your vote. Thank you!
